Maker Faire Returns to Miami with Cuban Flavor

Miami Mini Maker Faire returns for 2016 with a two day schedule, a new venue, a lineup of Makers from Florida and Cuba, and an exciting new music program!  The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, February 20th and Sunday, February 21st at the National YoungArts Foundation campus. The iconic campus will be packed full of awe-inspiring inventions, performances, and workshops by more than 150 local and regional innovators in science, technology, multi-disciplinary arts, education, and design.

As part of improved relations with Cuba, 11 entrepreneurs from the acclaimed mixed-use creative space Fabrica de Arte Cubano, in Havana, Cuba, will be exhibiting at Miami Mini Maker Faire. The exhibits represent a diverse range of craftsmanship, from industrial design and architecture to graphic design, fashion design, and bronze sculpting. Fabrica de Arte Cubano co-founder X Alfonso โ€” a classically trained musician and one of the pioneers of Cubaโ€™s hip-hop and afro-rock scenes โ€” will also play an evening concert at the Faire.

Miami Mini Maker Faire tickets are on sale now. The Music Makers Showcase featuring X Alfonso and Afrobeta takes place from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on February 20th. Tickets to the Music Makers Showcase are free.

Iโ€™ll be visiting the event on Saturday to see some of my favorite Florida Makers, and Iโ€™m very excited to meet the Makers from Cuba. One of my projects will be at the event โ€” I wrote the code for Uncle Boโ€™s Beef Jerky dehydrator after we accidentally plugged it into a 3-phase outlet at Maker Faire Orlando last September (Oops!). Make sure you stop by to get some beef jerky โ€” and to see the Arduino-controlled dehydrator!
