Engine repair and rebuilding

Drew writes – “Like many people, I learned about the four stroke internal combustion engine in junior high school science class, but one look under a car’s hood makes it obvious that the pedagogical diagrams of a single cylinder left out a lot of the details. Unwilling to disassemble the motor of my daily driver, yet interested to learn some of these details, I signed up for an engine repair and rebuilding course at the local community college.

I got to use a delightful array of specialized tools, learn about measuring devices, and play with diagnostic equipment. The pinnacle of the class was tearing a GM 3800 engine down to its smallest pieces and then reassembling it. I managed to get some photos of the process. Those simple diagrams make a lot more sense when you can see what they’re really representing! Anyway, for the amount of hands-on learning I accomplished, it was definitely worth the relatively low tuition. I’d recommend this type of class to any Maker who wants an introduction to engines.” Link.
