Top 10: Knifemaking

Knives are a major โ€œgateway drugโ€ for many a young maker. They were for me, certainly. One of the first things I ever remember being proud of making was a cocobolo replacement handle (mounted with homemade โ€œmosaicโ€ pins) to repair my motherโ€™s favorite paring knife. (Coincidentally, both skills are covered in this round-up.)

Mom put that knife back in the kitchen drawer, but within a year my father gave up using it because, as he said, โ€œI was tired of getting the lecture about being careful every time I picked it up.โ€ Eventually she moved it out of the kitchen altogether, and put it with her jewels. Maybe Iโ€™ll post a picture of it someday.
