How much are gadgets really worth? The teardown…
Master of the ‘teardown’, Eric Pratt from iSuppli Corp. specializes in stripping down gadgets and finding out how much they’re really worth…The Mac mini which retails for $499 is actually worth $283 in parts and labor. The 2 Gig iPod Nano retails for $199, but is actually worth $103 in parts and labor. The most expensive component is actually the iPod Nano’s 2 Gigs of memory. Eric finished up with a G4 exclusive teardown of the Game Boy Micro which retails for $100. The actual cost of the Micro is only $44. The screen on the GB Micro is actually the most expensive component. Link.
Visions of Science 2005
Captured using a wide range of techniques, from state-of-the art scientific microscopes to standard and digital cameras, the images cover many different areas of science. For example, amongst the winning images we see a hatching mosquito, a close-up of salt and pepper, an artist’s impression of a migraine attack and care of a premature baby. [via] Link. HOW TO watch videos on the Pocket PC
The iPod video might not be your cup of shiny, and if you have a Pocket PC you can pretty much view videos now – in more formats, sans DRM. While it might require a bit more elbow grease than the one-click iTunes offers up, this handy guide rounds up most of the ways you’ll get, convert and load up video on a Pocket PC. Link.
Hand stitched DOS commands
The 21st century equivalent of the 18th century’s “Home Sweet Home” – a hand-stitched version of the ‘tracert’ DOS command, which is normally used to trace the specific network points that join one computer with another computer on the Internet network. the electronic tracert journey is determined by IP addresses of destinations, & how many milliseconds it takes to reach them. for those appreciating the art of data visualization stitching, see also lorenz manifold or other clothing-based examples. Panoramic VR movies – VRMag
If you’re really in to creating and viewing your own panoramic movies VRmag has a lot of good articles, resources and movies (I found the free Windows based pano maker I was looking for there) – the site also uses a a panoramic movie to navigate the site as well. Not exactly how you’d navigate most sites, but quite appropriate for the pano-fans out there. Link.
