The Corporate fallout Detector scans barcodes off of consumer products, and makes a clicking noise based on the environmental or ethical record (selectable via the “sensitivity” switch) of the manufacturer. It explores issues of corporate accountability and individual choice. Sensors embedded in a glove monitor the heart and hand sweat glands of a sleeping person to record emotional arousals provoked by the brain during dreaming periods. On June 14, sixspace will experience an invasion with RUBIKCUBISM – a logical exhibition by French artist Invader featuring mosaics, video installation, and both small and large-scale sculptures. For the past five years, Invader has conducted worldwide “invasions” with custom site-specific mosaic pieces based on the 1978 video game “Space Invaders” created by Toshiro Nishikado. MAKE pals over at iFabricate have a project I didn’t notice until now– Create your own super hi-tech 3-D laser scanner. Using just a laser pointer, wine glass, rotating platform, and a digital video camera, you can make accurate 3-D models of a object or person. Convert the video to an avi. Use an edge detection algorithm to find the location of the laser line. Reconstruct your 3-D model. Link.
Great art project on display in NYC- The goal is to stimulate users to rethink spending patterns, view consumption with a different perspective, and explore issues of material possessions and consumption. The vending machine, not only supports the function of an automated, self-contained system for swapping, but also frames the interaction in the problematic cultural context which it comments, insinuating notions of the immediacy, instant-gratification, and convenience, values often associated with vending machines. Gizmodo has a story about the new Kodak EasyShare camera- the Wifi camera with a really slick UI. I’ve been looking forward to this for awhile, but now it seems like it will be delayed until October. More bad news- the camera might only upload to Kodak’s Ofoto service (not Flickr or your own personal site/blog/other service). When it comes out I think we can expect both firmware and DNS hacks (like the PSP browser tricks) from folks who want to use more than just Kodak’s service. For $400+ it really needs to send your photos where you want them to go. Unless Kodak plans to significantly subsidize the cameras carrier-style, seems like a really odd move that won’t help sales Link.
