Clever gimmick from Germans Jirko Bannas and Oliver Seltmann, who, under the name Lightboys, market a few different types of these wall- and ceiling-mounted “light pictures.” This one, with a frame designed to suggest a giant instant film print, is called Polaboy. [via Dude Craft]
Remember Dazzle, the method of complex geometric camouflage painting introduced in WWI (designed to disguise the direction, size, and types of ships at sea)? Last year, New York University’s ITP student Adam Harvey’s Dazzle CV project brought a similar technology to modern facial recognition software.
“Based on the concept behind commercial units, but using everyday items (drinking straws, scrap PVC pipe, a kid’s humidifier from the thrift store, some scrap computer fans), he rigged up a device that creates a thin, even sheet of vapor mist. Almost translucent, but able to catch the light projected onto it from a rear-facing projector — which gives an eerie, floating hologram effect…”

Digital camera sensors are typically sensitive to infrared light, but camera manufacturers install a infrared cut-off filter to block these wavelengths. If you have an old Canon point and shoot camera and want to try out infrared photography, Matthew Petroff has posted a guide to modding a Canon PowerShot SD400 for this technique.
It’s been two weeks since we last visited the MAKE Flickr pool, and the long break (together with a lot of free time for a lot of clever, creative people with a lot of great new toys) has left it fairly bursting with great shots—even moreso than usual, which is hard enough to do justice in just seven selections. As usual, I’m going to try to hit some of the best project photography in standalone posts during the week, so if you’re disappointed to see your fantastic Flickr submissions missing from those gathered below, please bear with me and stay tuned.
