Maker Education is such a valuable role. These stories will bring you the latest information and tales of maker educators who area spreading the maker mindset. Help others learn how to make things or how to think like a maker at makerspaces, schools, universities, and local communities. The importance of maker education can not be understated. What some of you may not know about Make: Projects is that it’s a full wiki platform, able to handle long-form articles and tutorials, not just step-by-step projects. In celebration of the robot theme here on the site, and the new robot issue of the mag (MAKE Volume 27), we’ve built out the Robotics section of the Make: Projects platform.
The concept of interactive “smart cubes” has been around for awhile, but the introduction of Sifteo brings the concept to full market realization. The basic idea is to have a set of wirelessly-connected blocks that have embedded MCUs and LCD screens that change image and function in relation to the other blocks around them.
Over the next month (and beyond) I plan to chronicle my journey of going from Zero to Maker in this column here on MAKE. By rolling up my sleeves and getting my hands dirty, talking with other makers about how they got started, and my willingness to ask “stupid” questions, I hope to learn enough to be dangerous, to take an idea from inception to reality.
In April, 2009, Time Warner Cable, amid mounting concerns about flagging US competency in core technical areas, announced that it would be giving away $100 million to educational programs working in core science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines—the so-called STEM fields. Their Connect a Million Minds initiative, which is scheduled to run until 2013, has already collected almost 400,000 of its stated million-pledge goal.
Kris Kimmel of Kentucky Space is organizing the first hackerSPACE Workshop, which provides an opportunity for makers learn about building spacecraft from space professionals and engineers. The focus of the workshop is on the CubeSat satellite platform. The workshop is November 11-12 in Lexington, Kentucky.
