Tyto Alba is an art car made from the remnants of 25 bicycles, along with an owl figurehead fashioned from leather feathers. Brother John and Sister Sharon combine their skills of mechanical engineering and leather shoemaking to showcase their creation at Maker Faire Bay Area 2011.
Whenever there’s an available surplus of watch parts it seems that makers tend to gravitate toward constructing vehicular creations: motorcycles, mopeds, etc. We’ve covered these kinds of slick, brassy machines in the past, and Blogger user 2nde VIE (2nd Life) follows where other such makers left off, but then veers into creature territory. As impressive as this bottle-cap self-portrait from artist Mary Ellen Croteau may be, I probably would not have chosen to mention her piece “CLOSE,” here, if it weren’t for the interesting way that she has used sets of nested plastic bottle caps and bottle-cap liners to achieve a much deeper color palette than would’ve been possible using bottle caps without the nesting trick. Clever!
Ambitious work-in-progress from Brooklyn artist Jonathan Brand. So far, it would appear, he’s only finished the motor and one wheel. But even by themselves, those are impressively detailed models. Can’t wait to see it when it’s done!
