Ian Danforth has created a robot he hopes change how people, mainly children, think about and interact with robots. It’s called the Fenn. Ian, founder of Embodied AI, has written a children’s story about our contact with an alien planet and the creatures who live there. The Fenn is the robotic embodiment of one of those creatures. Ian and the Fenn will be at Maker Faire Bay Area this month.
From the creative mind of Steve Belfer, who composed music for the animated TV show “Spongebob Squarepants,” comes this awesome homemade bubble machine. The video that shows it in action is, of course, accompanied by Belfer’s fun and quirky tunes.
Last month, Super Awesome Sylvia, one of our favorite young makers, was selected to show off her WaterColorBot at the White House and meet President Obama. Yesterday, Joey Hudy, another young maker and MAKE regular, was named by Business Insider as one of 10 smartest kids in the world. Wow.

St. Louis hackerspace The Disruption Department’s Student Fellowship Program takes the kids to a new spot each month and they learn something about mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering. For the April event, the kids were introduced to Arduino. Read about how it went, and check out some snaps from the day.
Operation is a game that lets you test your hand-eye coordination by removing a variety of ailment tokens from a cartoon patient without touching the metal sides of each slot. Since its release in 1965, there have been a lot of special editions created. These feature popular characters such as Buzz Lightyear, R2D2 and Iron Man. The game’s simple design makes it very versatile and easy to adapt.
LED hula hoops are so beautiful to watch, and creating a custom hoop is a satisfying challenge. Twenty-one LEDs are used in this hoop; 6 are flashing LEDs that cycle through the colors of the rainbow.
