The Robots have returned in MAKE Volume 27!

One of my favorite writing assignments is my “ReMaking History” column that appears in each issue of MAKE magazine. The basic premise of the column is to meet a famous scientist or inventor by recreating their work using modern tools and materials. I’ve had a chance to learn about the lives of famous scientists, and very often, I am amazed by their stories.

Adam discusses Maker Faire and MAKE, the maker movement, the sad death of shop classes in schools, our current sweet-spot period for hacking the tech in our lives, and the need to embrace a certain degree of danger/risk in learning. A really nice piece.
Micheal Dittman and his daughter Paige built longboards together, based on the article in MAKE Volume 26. Besides this being epically cool and sweet in and of itself, they started the project over Spring Break, but when Paige had to go back to school, they continued to collaborate, finish their projects via Skype and email.
Andy Paiko does some amazing things with glass. Paiko has painstakingly re-created intricate antique machines almost exclusively out of glass, including a seismograph, a spinning wheel, weight scales, and even a large-scale Ben Franklin-esque glass armonica — and yes, they all work.
