Recalling Everyday Things

A few months ago on vacation on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, I went into a used bookstore which the proprietor proudly told me was “the westernmost bookstore in the United States.” Searching the shelves, I came upon a delightful four-volume series, “A History of Everyday Things in England“, written by Marjorie and C. H. B. Quennell, and first published in 1918. “Everyday Things” was written for boys and girls who “should be trained to do useful work and learn to use their hands.”

Each face of “DodecaHedron of Dragons II” by California artist Scott Van Note is identically patterned, hand-carved on a pentagonal tiling designed by Scott himself. I had the pleasure of meeting Scott at BAMF 2011, where he was helping out at the Explorable Microscopy booth. We started talking, and he handed me this amazing object. I caught up with him, after the Faire, and got him to answer a few questions about it.

For a long time now, MAKE has wanted to find some way to publicly acknowledge companies that have responded in a positive way to the growing influence of maker/hacker culture. In 2006, we published The Maker’s Bill of Rights, and since then we have often been involved in exposing and lampooning particularly egregious affronts to the principles of open access to technology that it embodies.
